Taiwan Minister Regrets and Apologizes for Racist Remark

Taiwan Minister: Taiwan’s Labour Minister, Hsu Ming-chun, offered an apology for her remarks concerning the recruitment of Indian migrant workers, which drew criticism for their perceived racial undertones.

In an interview, Minister Hsu initially indicated a focus on recruiting workers from northeastern India, citing similarities in skin colour and dietary habits.

She further noted the skills of individuals in the region, particularly in manufacturing, construction, and farming, as per assessments from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

However, during a legislative hearing, Minister Hsu expressed regret for her comments, emphasizing Taiwan’s commitment to labour policies based on equality and devoid of discrimination, whether for local or foreign workers.

Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an apology, recognizing the inappropriate nature of the discourse surrounding the recruitment of Indian workers.

Taiwan affirmed its respect for India’s diverse culture and the enduring friendship between the two nations, pledging to enhance cultural exchanges and mutual understanding to strengthen cooperation and partnership between the two countries.

The ministry expressed optimism for support from the Taiwanese people in the country’s efforts to engage globally and foster substantive interactions with Indo-Pacific partners.

This incident underscores Taiwan’s dedication to inclusive policies and the importance of fostering respectful dialogue in international relations.
