Born on August 26, 1947, in the picturesque village of Hemmige along the Kaveri River in Karnataka, India, Dr. Iyengar’s journey is a testament to dedication, brilliance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Educational Odyssey of Sitharama Iyengar

Dr. Sitharama Iyengar’s academic journey commenced at the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) in India, where he earned his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Further honing his skills, he pursued an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Undeterred by geographical boundaries, his quest for knowledge led him to the United States, where he earned his Ph.D. in engineering from Mississippi State University in 1974.

His foray into academia began at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he joined the Computer Science Department as one of the pioneering faculty members.

Notably, he ascended to the position of department chair and held the role for an impressive 22 years. Dr. Iyengar’s impact extended far beyond the borders of LSU; he actively collaborated on research topics with colleagues worldwide, fostering a culture of global innovation.

Prolific Research and Publications

Dr. Sitharama Iyengar’s research prowess shines through in his extensive body of work. As a Principal Investigator (PI)/Co-PI on numerous NSF, DARPA, and MURI funded projects, he has played a pivotal role in advancing fields like distributed sensor networks and robotics.

His contributions transcend traditional boundaries, evident in over 600 research papers, 22 books, and publications in esteemed outlets such as MIT Press, John Wiley, and IEEE Computer Society Press.

Noteworthy publications include groundbreaking works like “Satellite Quantum Repeaters for a Quantum Internet” and “Bidirectional Teleportation for Underwater Quantum Communications.”

His insights into smart grids, security, and privacy issues are encapsulated in the book “Smart Grids: Security and Privacy Issues,” demonstrating a breadth of knowledge that reverberates globally.

Dr. Sitharama Iyengar’s stellar contributions have garnered him acclaim and recognition from prestigious organizations. A member of the European Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of IEEE, ACM, AAAS, and other esteemed institutions, he has received accolades such as the Lifetime Achievement Award from ISAM-IIT (BHU) and the IEEE Computer Society’s Technical Achievement Award.

The accolades culminated in the creation of the FuseCPA Algorithm or Brooks Iyengar algorithm in 1996, a defining paradigm in his research. This algorithm, recognized with a Test of Time research award by IEEE, stands as a benchmark for technology transition, impacting billions of users globally.

Current Pursuits and Impact

Currently serving as a Distinguished University Professor, Ryder Professor of Computer Science, and former Director of the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences at Florida International University (FIU), Dr. Sitharama Iyengar continues to push the boundaries of knowledge. His research interests span high-performance algorithms, biomedical computing, sensor fusion, and intelligent systems.
