Early Life and Career Beginnings of Subrah Iyar

Subrah Iyar’s journey into the world of technology began with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B). Following his graduation in 1982, he set his sights on the United States, where opportunities awaited.

His career trajectory saw him join tech giants like Apple Inc. and Intel, where he played pivotal roles in product development and marketing. Notably, during his tenure at Apple Inc. from 1983 to 1989, Iyar was instrumental in pioneering the first OS licensing business in the Newton Group, showcasing his innovative prowess from the outset.

The Birth of WebEx: A Visionary Partnership

However, it was in 1996 that Subrah Iyar’s entrepreneurial spirit truly came to fruition when he co-founded WebEx Communications alongside Min Zhu, a Stanford University-trained System Engineer. Their collaboration stemmed from a shared vision of revolutionizing web conferencing, an industry ripe for disruption.

WebEx faced its share of challenges initially, grappling with the limitations of low bandwidth. Yet, Subrah Iyar’s tenacity and strategic acumen propelled the company forward, paving the way for its exponential growth in the broadband era. With a $25 million venture capital injection in 1999, WebEx expanded its reach, becoming a cornerstone of online collaboration.

Climbing the Summit: Cisco Acquisition and Beyond

The pinnacle of WebEx’s journey came in 2007 when Cisco Systems acquired the company for a staggering $3.2 billion, underscoring its significance in the tech landscape. Under Iyar’s leadership, WebEx flourished, facilitating over six billion meeting minutes monthly, a testament to its widespread adoption and impact.

A New Horizon: Moxo and Beyond

Following a hiatus spent with his daughters, Subrah Iyar embarked on a new venture, co-founding and assuming the role of CEO at Moxo in 2012. Positioned as a digital client interaction platform, Moxo garnered attention and investment from industry giants like Cisco and KDDI from Japan, signaling yet another chapter of innovation and success for Iyar.
