Sri Lanka has set its sights on revitalizing its tourism sector by introducing visa-free travel for citizens of seven countries. The move, announced by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Sabry, seeks to attract a wave of tourists and enhance economic recovery. This visionary pilot project, effective immediately, will run until March 31, creating ripples of excitement in the travel industry.
Earlier this year, Minister Ali Sabry underlined the significance of Sri Lanka’s relationship with India, deeming it “one of the most important” aspects of the country’s foreign policy.

He wanted to deepen cooperation with New Delhi to stimulate economic growth, suggesting the potential for the Indian currency to become a tradeable currency in Sri Lanka. This innovative approach echoes successful strategies adopted with Singapore, demonstrating Sri Lanka’s readiness to embrace India’s vast tourism potential.
The Sri Lankan Cabinet’s approval of free visas for travellers from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand represents a bold step towards enhancing the nation’s tourism landscape. The ultimate goal is to increase tourist arrivals, with the Ministry of Tourism setting its sights on a remarkable five million visitors in the coming years.
This strategic move also saves travellers time and money, eliminating the hassles of visa applications. By offering free access, Sri Lanka positions itself as a more attractive destination, removing a significant barrier for potential tourists.
The groundwork for this pioneering initiative began with a proposal presented in a recent Cabinet meeting. Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, Tourism and Lands Minister Harin Fernando, Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry collaboratively introduced the concept. The unanimous approval demonstrates the government’s dedication to fostering a thriving tourism industry.
The Cabinet’s vision extends beyond visa-free travel. Lanka plans to implement an e-ticketing system for most tourist sites in the near future, further streamlining the visitor experience and cementing its status as a premier travel destination.
