Sharmistha Dubey: Bridging Technology and Human Connection

Sharmistha Dubey : In the ever-evolving landscape of business leadership, one name stands out as a true trailblazer – Sharmistha Dubey. With a career spanning decades and a wealth of experiences that have moulded her into an inspirational figure, Dubey’s story is one that resonates with determination, innovation, and the power of understanding human connections.

Sharmistha Dubey – From Jamshedpur to the World

Sharmistha Dubey’s journey begins in the picturesque town of Jamshedpur, India, in the 1970s and ’80s. Raised in an era when technology and the internet were mere concepts on the horizon, she embarked on a remarkable path.

With a father who encouraged her to pursue an engineering degree at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, Sharmistha Dubey entered a male-dominated field. Remarkably, Sharmistha Dubey was the sole woman among a sea of male classmates, and one of them happened to be none other than Sundar Pichai, now the CEO of Google.

Her determination shone through even in challenging circumstances – there wasn’t even a women’s restroom on campus, but that didn’t deter her.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1993, Sharmistha Dubey worked briefly for a steel company before making the pivotal decision to pursue higher education in the United States. This journey led her to Ohio State University, where she earned a Master’s degree, setting the stage for her future endeavours.

A Career Unveiled

Dubey’s career officially took flight in 1998 when she joined Texas Instruments as an engineer. However, it was her subsequent move to supply chain management software company i2 Technologies that would set the tone for her illustrious career. In 2006, she made a significant leap, joining Match.com, the pioneer in online dating.

Her tenure at Match Group was marked by versatility, as Sharmistha Dubey assumed various roles, including President of Match Group Americas, Chief Product Officer of Match, and Chief Product Officer and EVP of The Princeton Review. Notably, she also served as EVP for Tutor.com from 2013 to 2014, showcasing her wide-ranging expertise.

The Rise of a Visionary

Dubey’s impact on the online dating industry became most evident during her tenure as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Tinder in 2017. She spearheaded the launch of Tinder Gold, a move that transformed Tinder into the highest-grossing non-gaming app worldwide.

Her intuition led her to introduce the “Likes You” feature, allowing users to see who had liked their profiles before swiping left or right. This feature not only increased user satisfaction but also became a lucrative offering available exclusively to Tinder Gold subscribers, propelling Tinder into the billion-dollar league.

Applying Anthropology to Technology

What sets Dubey apart is her unique ability to blend technology with human behaviour insights. Her background in engineering and her early curiosity about human interactions gave her a distinctive advantage.

Sharmistha Dubey seamlessly integrated sociological and anthropological elements into the complex realm of human relationships. Her innovative thinking mirrors the matchmaking process in India, where cultural nuances and personality matching play a crucial role.

The Pandemic Pivot

Dubey’s crowning achievement came when she was appointed CEO of Match Group in early 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic began its global rampage. As the head of a company predicated on in-person meetings, she faced unprecedented challenges. However, her visionary leadership shone through as she expedited the development of video features and products.

The pandemic’s isolation drove people to seek connections, leading to remarkable increases in engagement across Match Group platforms. Honesty and meaningful connections took precedence over physical appearances, resulting in a substantial revenue boost.

The Heart of It All

Dubey’s dedication to helping people find lasting relationships stems from her own fulfilling marriage of over 25 years. She believes that kindness and generosity are the essential criteria for lasting love. Her desire to foster relationships that make individuals better versions of themselves underpins her work as the ‘boss of romance.’
