Her dedication and leadership abilities quickly earned her positions on the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANCYL, and later, the Branch Executive Committee of the ANC itself.
This early involvement with the ANC gave her a deep understanding of the issues facing her community, particularly in Limpopo. Her passion for creating positive change motivated her to stand for election to the Limpopo Provincial Legislature in 2014, where she was ranked 17th on the ANC’s candidate list. Shaikh’s commitment to her cause paid off as the ANC secured 39 seats in the provincial legislature, and she began her tenure as a Member of the Provincial Legislature.
During her time in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature, Shahidabibi Shaikh was an active participant in several critical committees, including those overseeing social development, treasury, provincial administration, sports, arts and culture, oversight mechanisms, and quality of life. After the 2019 general election, the ANC selected Shahidabibi Shaikh as a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) from Limpopo. This was a significant appointment, as it gave her the platform to engage with national legislative processes and influence decisions affecting the country as a whole.
Her commitment to justice and security led to her election as Chairperson of the Select Committee on Security and Justice in the NCOP, a role she assumed unopposed on June 26, 2019.
