Sir Rajeshwar Sarup Roger Bhatnagar, KNZM, was a name that echoed through the corridors of New Zealand’s business community and beyond. Born on October 26, 1942, in New Delhi, India, his life was a remarkable example of resilience, ambition, and triumph over adversity.
His journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of New Zealand’s most successful businessmen and philanthropists is a story that continues to inspire many. Sir Roger’s legacy is not only one of business acumen but of generosity, compassion, and determination to leave a lasting impact on society.
Early Life and World Travels of Roger Bhatnagar
Roger Bhatnagar’s early life was marked by modesty. Growing up in the bustling streets of New Delhi, he experienced the struggles that often come with a lack of financial resources. Yet, even from a young age, he exhibited a tenacity that would shape his future. In the 1960s, with little more than ambition and curiosity, Bhatnagar set out on a world tour to explore opportunities abroad.
These years of exploration were not easy. During this time, he faced significant hardships, occasionally sleeping rough when money was scarce. Despite these struggles, he never lost sight of his goal to create something meaningful. His travels eventually led him to Canada, where he found a foothold in the world of electronics retail, working in British Columbia. It was here that Bhatnagar began to hone his skills in the electronics industry, learning the intricacies of retail that would later prove to be the foundation of his success.
Moving to New Zealand: A New Beginning
In 1980, with a wealth of experience and his growing family, Sir Roger Bhatnagar migrated to New Zealand, a country where his name would soon become synonymous with business success. Alongside his New Zealand-born wife and Canadian-born children, he embarked on a new chapter of life. The move to New Zealand was not without its challenges, but Bhatnagar’s relentless drive allowed him to thrive in his new environment.
Shortly after arriving, he opened his first home audio store in Auckland, which he named Sound Plus. The business quickly expanded, and within a few years, Bhatnagar had successfully turned his venture into a chain of nine stores. His innovative marketing strategies, such as the now-famous “Pyjama Parties” on Auckland’s Queen Street, helped set his business apart from the competition. His retail motto, “stack ’em high and kiss ’em goodbye,” became emblematic of his aggressive discounting style, which helped him win over customers.
The Noel Leeming Takeover: A Bold Move
Perhaps the most pivotal moment in Sir Roger Bhatnagar’s career came in 1991 when he, alongside business associate Greg Lancaster, purchased the consumer electronics chain Noel Leeming. At the time, Noel Leeming was in receivership, and the move to acquire the struggling company was seen as a high-risk venture. However, Bhatnagar’s keen intuition and entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to see potential where others saw failure. With a purchase price of around $3 million, this bold move would soon prove to be a masterstroke.
Under Bhatnagar’s leadership, Noel Leeming quickly turned its fortunes around. In 1993, the company was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange with a market capitalization of approximately $26 million. His success with Noel Leeming was not just about financial gain—it was a testament to his ability to resurrect a failing business and turn it into a household name.
The following years saw further growth as Noel Leeming merged with competitor Bond & Bond to form Pacific Retail. Bhatnagar’s business acumen was on full display, and his achievements cemented his reputation as a formidable force in New Zealand’s retail industry.
Philanthropy and Generosity
Beyond business, Sir Roger Bhatnagar was deeply committed to giving back to the community. His success allowed him to support several charitable causes, including the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, child cancer initiatives, and diabetes research. In 1997, he donated a substantial sum of $250,000 to the Breast Cancer Foundation, marking his commitment to health causes that affected so many.
Roger Bhatnagar’s contributions were not just financial. In 2017, his collection of cricket memorabilia, a personal passion of his, was donated to Auckland Cricket and placed on permanent display at Eden Park’s Bert Sutcliffe Lounge. His acts of generosity reflected his deep-seated belief in using his success to uplift others and support the causes he cared about.
Honours and Legacy
Sir Roger Bhatnagar’s outstanding contributions to business and philanthropy were recognized in the 1998 Queen’s Birthday Honours, where he was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit. This knighthood was not only a recognition of his personal achievements but also a milestone for the Indian community in New Zealand, as he became the first person of Indian descent to be knighted in the country.
