Raj Mukherji :- Early Life and Entrepreneurial Spirit
Raj Mukherji’s roots trace back to Indian American immigrants who arrived in 1970, seeking the American dream. Facing economic challenges, Mukherji navigated through high school, college, and grad school as an emancipated minor when his parents had to return to India due to financial constraints. Despite adversities, Mukherji’s entrepreneurial spirit shone through.
Labelled a “wunderkind” by the media, Raj Mukherji founded an Internet consulting and software development company in the sixth grade, which he later sold to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps after the September 11 attacks. Serving as a reservist in military intelligence, Mukherji exemplified his commitment to both his country and personal principles.

Mukherji’s journey took him from withdrawing from high school at 15 to enrolling in an early college program at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, earning his bachelor’s degree from Thomas A. Edison State University, and obtaining a master’s from the University of Pennsylvania. Not stopping there, he earned a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Seton Hall Law School.
His foray into the world of business was equally impressive. As the CEO of companies spanning healthcare, information technology, medical cannabis, and real estate, Raj Mukherji achieved an aggregate enterprise value of half a billion dollars.
Co-founding a public affairs firm at 19, he grew it into the state’s third-largest lawyer-lobbying firm, showcasing his extensive ties to New Jersey Democratic establishments and the Obama administration.
Beyond business, Mukherji’s diverse pursuits include performances on Broadway and in motion pictures as a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). In 2011, he was honoured as a “Legends” awardee by the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce.
Public Service Trailblazer
At 24, Raj Mukherji made his mark in public service, becoming the youngest Commissioner and Chairman of the Jersey City Housing Authority, overseeing a $70 million agency serving over 16,000 residents.
During his tenure, the agency received accolades for its management of Section 8, and Mukherji’s commitment was evident as he declined a substantial salary, opting to earn one dollar per year in solidarity with the economic climate.
His public service trajectory continued with his appointment as Deputy Mayor of Jersey City at 27, where Raj Mukherji again demonstrated a commitment to fiscal responsibility by refusing a six-figure salary and a city-issued car.
Mukherji’s legislative career, which began at 28, has been marked by prolific contributions. Serving as the Assembly Judiciary Committee Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Assembly Appropriations Committee, Raj Mukherji has sponsored numerous bills that address critical issues, from criminal justice reform to combating addiction epidemics and protecting wildlife.
