Public Service Commission : In a significant development, the Accredited Employer Work Visa scheme faces intense scrutiny as the Public Service Commission initiates a comprehensive review of its processes. This move comes in response to allegations raised by an internal whistleblower, casting doubt on the effectiveness of checks on employers and job verification procedures. Immigration Minister Andrew Little, who received an anonymous letter detailing these concerns, expressed the need for a thorough investigation into the scheme’s operations.
During a press conference held just after 5 pm, Minister Little shared his determination to ensure the integrity of the Accredited Employer Work Visa applications. The allegations pointed towards potential shortcomings in the verification of employers’ authenticity and the completeness of job checks. “There was enough in the letter, not withstanding it was anonymous, that led me to believe that it was important that I assure myself that the rules for processing those, particularly Accredited Employer Work Visa applications, are being done thoroughly and that the allegations in the letter are investigated,” stated Minister Little.
This review gains even more significance against the backdrop of recent controversies surrounding the scheme. The treatment of migrant workers, particularly 115 Indian and Bangladeshi individuals, has raised concerns about exploitation and overcrowded living conditions. These workers, arriving on Accredited Employer Work Visas, have faced significant delays in obtaining paid work, despite substantial fees paid for their visas.
Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) chief executive Carolyn Tremain expressed the ministry’s support for the review, emphasizing the importance of maintaining trust and confidence in the immigration system. “It is important that there is trust and confidence in the immigration system and we remove opportunities for migrant exploitation. We are committed to improving any policies and processes deemed necessary,” Tremain stated.
While the focus of the review revolves around the alleged shortcomings in the scheme’s processes, Minister Little clarified that fraudulent activities originating overseas would not be part of this investigation. He reiterated his confidence in the existing system’s ability to detect and address fraudulent applications.
Public Service Commission & Review
The review is set to be conducted by a former senior public servant, appointed by the Public Service Commission. Discussions regarding the terms of reference are underway, and the review is expected to commence in the near future. Despite the ongoing review, Minister Little does not believe suspending the Accredited Employer Work Visa scheme is necessary.
