NRIs Visit Temple in India

NRI Youth: A group of 57 young non-resident Tamils from Australia, Canada, Fiji, and Sri Lanka participated in the Reaching for Roots initiative, organized by the Tamil Nadu government. This initiative falls under the Non-Resident Tamil Welfare Board, established in 2022, aiming to connect the NRIs with their culture and tradition.

During their visit to the Nellaiappar – Gandhimathi Temple in Tirunelveli, the delegation explored the temple’s statues, the musical pillars, and amazing infrastructure. Author Narumpoonathan provided insights into the temple’s history, the deities Nellaiappar and Gandhimathi, and shared information about freedom fighter.

The delegation was welcomed by officials, including deputy collector Shenbagavalli, tourism officer Sivaraman, and tahsildar Thirupathi. Following the temple visit, they went to the VO Chidambaranar Memorial Hall in the city, where they watched a light and sound show on the freedom fighter and explored books written about him.

In Tuticorin, the group visited the memorial hall of Poligar King Veerapandiya Kattabomman at Kayathar and learned about his role in the freedom struggle.

This cultural tour, which began in Mamallapuram on December 27, included visits to Thanjavur, Sivaganga, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari before reaching Tirunelveli. The itinerary also includes upcoming visits to Madurai, Trichy, Gingee, and Kancheepuram before concluding in Chennai. The delegation plans to share their experiences during the Non-Resident Tamils day celebrations in Chennai on Jan 11 and 12.
