Marriages : In the realm of Non-Resident Indian (NRI) marriages, the Law Commission of India is intensifying efforts to tackle the issues of abandonment and mistreatment, especially towards women.
A comprehensive study is underway, scrutinizing existing legal gaps that facilitate problems like the abandonment of brides in NRI marriages. Sources within the commission suggest that the focus is on establishing a robust structural framework to confront and rectify these issues.

The impetus for this examination stems from a recommendation by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which has been inundated with a plethora of complaints related to marital problems faced by Indian women married to overseas Indians.
This alarming trend encompasses various grievances such as the abandonment of wives in India, delays in visa sponsorship by spouses, cessation of communication, harassment by husbands and in-laws, ex-parte divorces, and complex issues involving child custody.
The commission’s inquiry extends beyond domestic legislation, delving into international public and private laws. The goal is to eliminate the loopholes that currently benefit those who violate the sanctity of NRI marriages. Sources reveal a keen focus on addressing procedural requirements within the legal system to ensure a more efficient and protective framework.
Notably, states like Punjab, where the problem is particularly prevalent, will be under the commission’s lens, emphasizing the need for tailored solutions to regional challenges. The study aims to safeguard individuals abandoned by NRI partners, offering a beacon of hope for those entangled in the complexities of international marriages.
The MEA, grappling with a surge in complaints, remains committed to supporting affected individuals. Their initiatives include counselling, guidance, and information dissemination about legal procedures. Walk-in sessions, open house meetings, and 24×7 helplines for emergency situations underscore the multifaceted approach taken by the Indian government.
Additionally, financial and legal assistance, facilitated by the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF), is extended to distressed NRI women where applicable. This holistic strategy aims not only to rectify existing issues but also to prevent future victimization within the context of NRI marriages.
