An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 jolted Nepal on Friday night, leaving a trail of destruction and heartbreak in its wake. The catastrophe claimed the lives of at least 128 people, with over 100 others left injured.
The earthquake’s impact rippled as far as Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and the Delhi-NCR region, reminding us of the region’s shared vulnerability to the forces of nature.
Nepal Earthquake
The earthquake struck at 11:47 pm, with its epicentre recorded at Jajrakot’s Lamidanda, situated 142 km from Kathmandu and a substantial 941 km from New Delhi. Communication remains cut off at many places in Nepal, and officials fear that the death toll might continue to rise.
In the face of this disaster, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences and solidarity with Nepal. He took to social media, stating, “India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families, and we wish the injured a quick recovery.”
Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ swiftly responded to the crisis. He announced that he would be heading to the incident site on Saturday morning, accompanied by a medical team. Both the Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel have been mobilized to carry out rescue and relief efforts.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s office read, “Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property in the earthquake on Friday night and has mobilized all three security bodies for immediate rescue and relief.”
Efforts to aid those injured are already underway, with patients receiving treatment at the Surkhet District Hospital. The Prime Minister has given clear instructions to security agencies to promptly carry out rescue and relief work.
