Born on March 1, 1962, in Antananarivo, Madagascar, Loumia’s journey from a wealthy family of Indian traders to the co-founder of the international lingerie brand Princesse Tam Tam is nothing short of extraordinary. Her story is one of creativity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to empowering women.

Early Life and Influences of Loumia Hiridjee

Loumia Hiridjee’s early years were spent in Madagascar, where she was raised in a prosperous family that valued education and entrepreneurship. Her family background provided her with a unique perspective on commerce and the importance of seizing opportunities.

In 1972, at the age of ten, Loumia moved to France to join her sister Sharma at a Catholic boarding school. This move marked the beginning of her deep connection with Paris, a city known for its fashion and cultural sophistication.

The Birth of Princesse Tam Tam

In 1985, Loumia and her sister Sharma founded Princesse Tam Tam, a brand that would revolutionize the lingerie industry. The name of the company was inspired by the 1935 film “Princesse Tam Tam,” starring Josephine Baker, a symbol of grace, strength, and independence. This choice reflected Loumia’s vision of creating lingerie that was not only beautiful but also empowered women to feel confident and expressive.

Princesse Tam Tam quickly gained recognition for its innovative designs, vibrant colors, and exceptional quality. Loumia’s keen sense of fashion, combined with her business acumen, propelled the brand to international success. By 2005, the company had expanded to 158 boutiques worldwide and had become a staple in the wardrobes of women across the globe.

A Passion for Empowerment

Loumia’s commitment to empowerment extended beyond the realm of fashion. She was deeply passionate about promoting independence and confidence among women. In her later years, she was developing a lifestyle website aimed at Indian women, focusing on themes of empowerment and self-expression. This project highlighted her dedication to using her influence to create positive change in the lives of women everywhere.

Achievements and Recognition

Throughout her career, Loumia Hiridjee received numerous accolades for her contributions to the fashion industry. In 1994, she was named France’s Business Manager of the Year, and in 1996, she was honored as Businesswoman of the Year. Her expertise and innovative spirit were further recognized in 1998 when she received the prestigious Prix Veuve Clicquot. These awards celebrated not only her success as a businesswoman but also her role as a trailblazer in the fashion world.

Tragic End and Lasting Legacy

Tragically, Loumia Hiridjee’s life was cut short during the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. She and her husband, Mourad Amarsy, were dining at the Oberoi Trident Hotel when they were caught in the violence that claimed the lives of 188 people. Loumia was just 46 years old.
