Karnataka Looks to Setup Dedicated NRI Ministry

Karnataka to Establish: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara announced plans in the legislative assembly to establish a dedicated ministry for NRI Kannadigas, fulfilling a promise made in the 2023 Congressional polls manifesto.

Welcoming NRIs at Vidhana Soudha, invited by Speaker UT Khader, Parameshwara emphasized the need for such a ministry, citing the example of Kerala where a separate NRI Ministry addresses various concerns, including repatriation of bodies.

Parameshwara, who chaired the Congress Manifesto Committee for the 2023 polls, affirmed the government’s commitment to this initiative, stating that it would be implemented earnestly in the near future.

Highlighting the increasing trend of NRIs returning to contribute to India’s development, Parameshwara noted their willingness to invest and provide CSR funds. He mentioned the establishment of an NRI Forum by the Karnataka government in 2008, with Dr. Arathi Krishna appointed as its Deputy Chairman.

Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Rai further advocated for the creation of a separate board dedicated to the welfare of NRIs from Karnataka. This will maintain the Interest of NRIs for their mainland. He also emphasized on how NRIs contribution is an important aspect as well.

The move to establish an NRI Ministry underscores the government’s recognition of the importance of engaging with NRIs and addressing their concerns, aligning with efforts to facilitate their contributions to the state’s progress.
