Karnail Singh Nijhar’s early life was a remarkable saga of struggle and grit. Born into a poor family, his father, Amar Singh, had migrated from Punjab in 1926 to work as a laborer in the Rahman Hydraulic Tin Mine. Growing up in a kampung house devoid of basic amenities, young Nijhar faced immense challenges, including illiteracy until the age of nine.

As a student at St. Xavier’s Institution in Penang, he juggled academics with odd jobs like being a ball boy to make ends meet. He pursued higher studies, eventually earning a Ph.D. in economics, making him one of the few Indians in Malaysia to hold such a distinction at the time.
