Kamal Khera : In the realm of Canadian politics, few figures shine as brightly as Kamal Khera. Born on February 4, 1989, this dynamic individual has become a beacon of hope, a symbol of determination, and an inspiration to countless people across the nation.

From Nurse to Parliamentarian

Kamal Khera’s journey began with a deep-seated desire to serve humanity. A first-generation Canadian, she arrived in Canada from Delhi, India, at a young age. Even as a child, her unwavering commitment to helping others was evident. This drive led her to pursue a degree in Nursing at York University, where she earned an Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Before venturing into politics, Khera worked as a registered nurse in the oncology unit at St. Joseph’s Health Centre Toronto. This experience provided her with a profound understanding of the issues affecting people’s health and well-being on a daily basis.

A Rising Star in Politics

Kamal Khera’s foray into politics began when she was nominated as the Liberal Party’s candidate in Brampton West in December 2014. Her victory in the subsequent federal election in October 2015 marked the start of an extraordinary political career.

At the time of her first election, Khera was not only the youngest Liberal Member of Parliament but also the second-youngest overall, trailing only behind the NDP’s Pierre-Luc Dusseault.

Her dedication and competence were quickly recognized, leading Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to appoint her as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health in December 2015. This was just the beginning of her impressive journey within the political sphere.

Khera’s roles expanded to include Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue from January 2017 to August 2018, and then Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development from August 2018 to January 2021.

Her unwavering commitment to public service was evident when she made the difficult decision to step down from her role as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development in January 2021, respecting pandemic-related travel restrictions.

Championing the Elderly

On October 26, 2021, Kamal Khera’s dedication was further rewarded as she was appointed as the Minister of Seniors in Justin Trudeau’s cabinet. In this role, she succeeded Deb Schulte, who lost re-election in the riding of King-Vaughan. Khera’s promotion made her one of the youngest members of the cabinet and the Privy Council of Canada.

A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

Khera’s journey continued to evolve on July 26, 2023, when she was appointed as the Minister of Diversity and Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities. This role marked another significant step in her quest to create a more inclusive and equitable Canada.
