Political Career
Jenifer Rajkumar’s political journey is a testament to her determination. In 2011, she made history by becoming the first Indian American elected as the District Leader of the 65th District of the New York State Assembly. Her victory, in which she defeated a 28-year incumbent with over 70% of the vote, was just the beginning.
Re-elected to that office two more times in 2013 and 2015, Jenifer’s leadership shone through in her efforts to bring the M9 bus service back to Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan.
She collaborated closely with Democracy for Battery Park City, advocating for residents’ representation on the board of the Battery Park City Authority.
In 2013, she ran for the New York City Council in the Democratic primary in the city’s first Council district, focusing on affordable housing and community-friendly development.
