Indian tourists are embarking on global journeys in record numbers, with international departures surging by 12% in the first half of 2024 compared to pre-pandemic levels, according to a report by the rating agency CRISIL. This growth is transforming Indians into a dominant force in the global tourism landscape, with Indian travellers now accounting for a significant portion of the world’s outbound tourism market.
Factors Fueling the Boom
The rise in Indian tourists abroad is being fueled by several factors. First and foremost, rising disposable incomes have made international travel more affordable. In addition, improved airline connectivity has opened up more destinations to travellers, while streamlined visa processes have made it easier for them to travel abroad. The report from CRISIL reads, “The rise in disposable income has made international travel more affordable, and improved airline connectivity has made foreign destinations more accessible.”
The growing accessibility of international travel has had a major impact on the choices Indian tourists are making. Rather than sticking to traditional vacation spots, Indian travellers are increasingly seeking unique experiences, such as wellness retreats and adventure trips. The demand for international destinations has skyrocketed, especially in places where travel has become cost-effective.
International vs. Domestic Travel
In many cases, international trips are now only marginally more expensive than domestic vacations. For example, a five-day all-inclusive trip from Mumbai to Bangkok during Diwali week, staying in a five-star hotel, is approximately 7% cheaper than a similar trip to Goa. With four-star accommodations, the costs of trips to both Bangkok and Goa are nearly identical, making international travel an appealing alternative to domestic destinations.
“International destinations are increasingly becoming attractive, with trips sometimes only 5-10 per cent more expensive than domestic travel,” noted Pickyourtrail, an online travel platform, in a report shared by Business Standard.
The shift toward international travel is also being driven by convenience. According to Pickyourtrail’s co-founder, Hari Ganapathy, last-minute bookings to visa-free destinations have surged by 20-25% over the past year. “We’ve even seen customers booking trips while en route to the airport! Hotels are responding with enticing last-minute deals, making spontaneous international travel incredibly convenient,” Ganapathy added.
Budget-Conscious Indian Travellers
Travellers are known for balancing affordability with the desire for quality experiences. Most Indian tourists plan their international trips with a budget of between Rs 30,000 and Rs 70,000 per person for a week-long vacation. Value-for-money deals and package options are especially popular, allowing travellers to make the most of their trip while keeping costs in check.
Pickyourtrail’s insights highlight this shift in travel preferences. “Indians are increasingly opting for value-for-money options that still offer a great travel experience,” the platform notes. This trend of prioritising affordable yet enriching travel experiences is expected to continue as more nations recognise the potential of the Indian market and expand visa-free options for Indian citizens.
