In a remarkable milestone, the US Mission in India announced that over one million nonimmigrant visas were issued to Indians in 2024. This marks the second consecutive year of such high numbers, emphasizing the increasing demand among Indians for travel to the United States for tourism, business, and education.
The mission’s statement highlighted that 2024 saw a record number of visitor visas granted, reflecting a fivefold increase in the number of Indian visitors over the past four years. From January to November 2024, over two million Indians traveled to the US—a significant 26% jump compared to the same period in 2023.
With over five million Indians already holding nonimmigrant visas, the US Embassy reported issuing thousands more daily. This overwhelming demand reflects not only the strengthening ties between the two nations but also India’s growing presence on the global stage.
Facilitating Legal Immigration and Skilled Migration
In addition to nonimmigrant visas, tens of thousands of immigrant visas were issued in 2024, enabling legal family reunifications and facilitating the migration of skilled professionals. These individuals, upon their arrival, became permanent residents, further enriching the vibrant Indian diaspora in the US—a community already celebrated for its significant contributions across diverse sectors.
H-1B Visa Renewal Pilot Program
The US government also made strides in improving the visa process for Bharat professionals. A pilot program introduced in 2024 allowed H-1B visa holders to renew their visas within the United States. This initiative eliminated the need for applicants to travel back to India, saving time and resources.
The program streamlined the renewal process for thousands of Indian specialty occupation workers. The Department of State plans to formally establish this US-based renewal program in 2025, aiming to further enhance efficiency for applicants.
A Landmark Year for Indian Students
Students reached unprecedented milestones in 2024, making India the top sender of international students to the US for the first time since 2008. With over 331,000 Indian students studying in the United States, the nation solidified its position as the largest contributor to the international graduate student community.
Graduate student numbers surged by 19%, reaching nearly 200,000. These figures underscore the pivotal role Indian students play in US academia, contributing to research, innovation, and cross-cultural exchange.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The US Mission to India underscored its commitment to fostering robust bilateral ties while providing exceptional consular services.
“These achievements over the past year are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Mission’s staff and the enduring partnership between the United States and India,” the readout concluded.
