Indian Students Prefer to Stay in US Amid Challenges

Indian Students : Despite extended job layoffs, visa challenges, and job insecurity, Indian students in the United States persist in staying for work. According to a recent report from the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education (IIE), India stands as the second-largest contributor of students to the United States.

The Open Doors 2023 report, unveiled in Washington DC, highlights a substantial surge, with Indian student enrolment reaching a record-breaking approximate of around 269K in the academic year 2022-23, signifying an impressive 35% rise from the preceding year.Participation in OPT also experienced a 1.3% uptick, reaching a total of 69,062. Among Indian students in the US, STEM disciplines, particularly mathematics and computer science, continue to be the favoured fields of study.

According to the Fall 2023 international student enrolment snapshot, there is an 8% rise in international students in the US, with 70% of institutions prioritizing outreach to undergraduates and 80% focusing on graduate outreach for students from India.

As Indian students flock to American campuses, US universities are strategically amplifying recruitment efforts in India.

The surge in international enrolment is poised to restore numbers to pre-pandemic levels, reaching a peak of nearly 1.1 million students in 2018. The repercussions of COVID-19 led to a significant drop in enrolment over the subsequent two years, impacting academic exchange.
