India Semiconductor Talent Nation : In a groundbreaking development, India is poised to become a dominant force in the global semiconductor industry, as it gears up to meet the soaring demand for talent. A report released by the Semicon India Future Skills Talent Committee, set up in August last year, has revealed that the nation will need a staggering 12 lakh skilled professionals in semiconductor-related industries by the year 2032.
The committee, comprising representatives from the semiconductor industry, academia, and government, was established with a vital mission – to chart a roadmap for transforming India into a “Semiconductor Talent Nation.” The findings from this report have set the stage for an exciting future in the electronics and semiconductor sector.
According to the report, specific sectors within the semiconductor industry will require varying levels of talent. The semiconductor chip design sector will demand an additional 2,75,000 skilled professionals, while semiconductor fabrication and ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packing) facilities will require 25,000 and 29,000 manpower, respectively. This rising demand will encompass individuals with diverse qualifications, including diplomas, undergraduates, masters, and PhDs.
The report highlights several specialized disciplines that will be integral to the semiconductor industry’s growth in India. These disciplines include VLSI Design and Technology, Material Science, Applied Physics, Chemical Science, Process, and Industrial Engineering. By fostering expertise in these areas, India aims to establish itself as a global hub for semiconductor talent.
To bolster this ambitious goal, the Indian government has adopted an “ecosystem approach,” emphasizing global standard talent development as a critical requirement. Minister of State, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, explains that the government has already launched numerous skilling and academic initiatives to equip young Indians with the necessary capacities and capabilities to thrive in the semiconductor sector.
India Semiconductor Talent Nation & AICTE
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has played a pivotal role in shaping the semiconductor landscape. AICTE has formulated cutting-edge curricula for undergraduate, diploma, and minor degrees in the semiconductor domain to meet the industry’s evolving talent needs. Moreover, the Semicon India Future Skills/Chip to Startup (C2S) programme is projected to produce an impressive 85,000 highly qualified global talents over the next five years.
Collaboration with global academic and industry partners is also a cornerstone of India’s talent development strategy. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) have been signed between the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and prestigious institutions such as Purdue University and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. These collaborations aim to foster research and development programs and workforce training, further enriching India’s semiconductor talent pool.
