Hungary’s Diverse Residence Permits

Hungary Permanent Residency Pathway

Hungary’s Diverse: Hungary’s latest immigration legislation brings about a significant overhaul, featuring 24 distinct types of residence permits, eight of which cater specifically to employment purposes.

Notably, the erstwhile flexible category of residence permit for other purposes has been eradicated, streamlining the permit classifications.

Hungary’s Diverse Update…

A pivotal change lies in the introduction of separate work permit categories tailored for highly skilled professionals, low-skilled guest workers, and investors.

However, the practical application of these regulations remains pending, awaiting the announcement of implementation rules and detailed provisions.

Presently, new applications from third-country nationals are on hold, barring those related to residence permits categorized as of national interest, contingent upon ministerial approval.

For applications filed prior to December 31, 2023, the previous rules remain applicable, albeit decisions by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing won’t transpire before March 1, 2024.

Furthermore, residence permits expiring between January 1, 2024, and February 29, 2024, will be automatically prolonged until April 30, 2024.

Under the revamped legislation, guest worker residence permits are restricted to individuals employed by specified employers, from specified countries, and engaged in specified occupations.

Extensions are now capped at a total of three years, after which a fresh application is obligatory, precluding entitlements to permanent residence or family reunification for guest workers.

Additionally, Hungary introduces a golden visa scheme, slated from July offering investors a 20 year residency upon a minimum real estate fund investment of €250K, with detailed provisions yet to be disclosed.
