Born and raised in Nawanshahr, Punjab, India, Hargurdeep Saini’s journey began in a humble setting. His thirst for knowledge and passion for plant sciences led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Master of Science (Honours) in Botany from Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana. Saini’s desire to explore new frontiers took him to Australia, where he earned a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the University of Adelaide. In 2016, Hargurdeep Saini embraced a new challenge by becoming the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Canberra in Australia. Notably, Hargurdeep Saini oversaw the establishment of the University of Canberra Public Hospital and Canberra Specialist Medical Centre, illustrating his commitment to building bridges between academia and public health services.

His return to Canada in January 2020 as the 12th President and Vice-Chancellor of Dalhousie University came during one of the most challenging times in recent history—the global COVID-19 pandemic.
