Eiffel Tower: Disappointment struck visitors to the Eiffel Tower on Monday as a strike, stemming from concerns over financial mismanagement, forced the closure of this renowned tourist attraction. A notice posted in English at the entrance conveyed the message: “Due to a strike, the Eiffel Tower is closed. We apologize.”
The iconic landmark has experienced a surge in visitor numbers ahead of the upcoming Summer Olympics in the city. Tourists were forewarned of potential disruptions through multilingual notices on the tower’s website, advising them to check for updates before their visit or consider postponing their trip. Electronic ticket holders were encouraged to monitor their inboxes for any updates.
Eiffel Tower Strike
The Eiffel Tower’s operator also announced disruptions for visits on Tuesday, extending the closure due to the strike. Marisa Solis, an American tourist from New York City, expressed understanding while being disappointed, stating, “We’re a little disappointed, but we understand that people deserve a fair wage and proper working conditions.”
This marks the second closure in two months due to strikes, following a shutdown in December during the Christmas and New Year holidays. Stephane Dieu of the CGT union, representing numerous Eiffel Tower employees, explained that Monday’s strike aimed to secure proportional salary increases tied to ticket sales revenue and better monument maintenance under the Paris municipality’s ownership.
Union leaders criticize the operator’s business practices, citing inflated future visitor estimates, maintenance expenses, and employee compensation issues.
