Born on 12 February 1963 in Cape Town, Dr Iqbal Survé grew up in the suburb of Kenilworth. His family, one of the last families of colour in the area, faced the harsh realities of apartheid’s Group Areas Act. Engaging with the anti-apartheid Lansdowne Youth Movement, he found his voice and purpose in advocating for change. He pursued his studies in medicine at the University of Cape Town, graduating with an MBChB in 1987. Furthering his passion for sports science, he completed a fellowship with the American College of Sports Medicine and later earned an MBA from the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business.
