Her passion for helping others led her to Coimbatore Medical College, where she graduated as a medical doctor in 1974.
Her medical career flourished when she joined Kuala Lumpur General Hospital in 1975. Driven by a desire to make healthcare accessible, she founded Klinik Leela in 1983, serving the Cheras community for decades. Later, she ventured into aesthetic and nutritional medicine, earning accolades for her contributions to regenerative medicine.

Datuk Leelavathi’s political journey began within the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), where she held various leadership roles. In 1995, she achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Malaysian Indian woman elected to Parliament, representing the Kapar constituency.
Her victory in the 9th General Elections by an impressive majority of 18,759 votes marked a turning point in Malaysian politics. As a Member of Parliament, she worked tirelessly on public accounts committees and advocated for policies that addressed healthcare, education, and social equity.
