Canadian Government : In a remarkable shift, the Canadian government has shattered the monopoly of the International English Language Canadian Government : Test System (IELTS) for student visa applications under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) category with the New English Language Test. As of today, aspiring students can now submit their English language proficiency results from a range of alternative exams, ushering in a new era of flexibility and choice.
New English language Tests
The four newly accepted language proficiency exams include the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) General, the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This revolutionary change grants students greater agency in proving their language skills, with each test catering to unique preferences and needs.
Among these alternatives, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic stands out as a prime option for those envisioning their academic journey in Australia. On the other hand, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) enjoys widespread recognition across coveted educational destinations like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Impressively, over 98 percent of UK universities also embrace TOEFL scores, further enhancing its global appeal.
The decision to diversify English language proficiency tests comes as part of the overhaul of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) category—an expedited study permit processing program tailored for international students seeking enrollment in designated learning institutions across Canada. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) strives to process most SDS applications within a mere 20 calendar days, contingent on satisfying all eligibility criteria.
Canadian Government & SDS Category
To qualify for the SDS category, applicants must fulfil a set of prerequisites, including legal residency in designated countries, an acceptance letter from a post-secondary designated learning institution, proof of financial capability, medical examination clearance, police certificate submission, and academic transcripts. The introduction of English language test alternatives adds a new layer of accessibility for eligible candidates.
Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP)
While each of the four alternatives brings its own advantages, the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) General emerges as a standout choice for those seeking both Permanent Residence and Student Visas within the SDS category. By accepting CELPIP scores for both visa types, applicants can now save time and effort, avoiding the need to take separate exams.
In contrast to the rising IELTS fees, which recently escalated to Rs. 16,250, the flexibility of payment methods remains intact. Applicants can choose between credit/debit card, net banking, demand draft, and bank deposit options. A significant network of IELTS test centers spanning 75 cities, including three centres in Hyderabad, caters to the convenience of Indian students.
