The Government of Canada has granted a temporary reprieve to 700 Indian students following a plea from Aam Aadmi Party MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney, who serves as the International President of the World Punjabi Organization.
Vikramjit Singh Sahney stated on Friday that, thanks to the cooperation of the Indian High Commission and his personal appeal, the Canadian government has decided to temporarily suspend the deportation of the 700 students.
In his communication to the authorities, Sahney emphasized that these students are innocent victims of fraud and have not engaged in any forgery or deceitful activities. He explained that unauthorized agents had provided them with counterfeit admission letters and receipts of payment.
Furthermore, visas were issued without proper scrutiny. Consequently, when the students arrived in Canada, they were allowed entry by the immigration department. In addition, Sahney stressed that the students themselves bear no responsibility for the situation and are also victims of fraudulent practices.
Sahney further disclosed that an investigative committee would be established to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding this matter.
Punjab NRI Affairs Minister, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, joined efforts on Friday by sending letters to Sanjay Kumar Verma, the Indian High Commissioner to Canada, and Cameron Mackay, the Canadian High Commissioner to India, seeking their intervention in resolving the predicament faced by the 700 students who are currently at risk of deportation from Canada.
