Australia's Work and Holiday Visa for Indian Citizens to Launch October 1

Australia is set to welcome up to 1,000 Indian citizens annually under its Work and Holiday visa program, starting from October 1, 2024. This initiative, a key part of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), aims to strengthen bilateral relations, specifically enhancing mobility and deepening people-to-people connectivity between the two nations.

Piyush Goyal Welcomes the Development India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, expressed his enthusiasm for the program, stating, “During the visit, happy to learn that the Work and Holiday visa, a key commitment under India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, will be operational from 1st October 2024, which will facilitate mobility and deepen people-to-people connect.”

This new visa pathway is expected to create a significant opportunity for Indian youth to experience Australia while contributing to its workforce and economy.

What is the Work and Holiday Visa?

The Work and Holiday visa offers a unique opportunity for Indian nationals aged 18 to 30. It allows recipients to live, work, study, and travel in Australia for up to 12 months. During this time, visa holders can:

  • Work for any employer.
  • Study for up to four months.
  • Leave and re-enter Australia as many times as they like during their stay.

The visa cost is AUD 650 (approximately ₹36,748), providing an affordable way for young Indians to gain international exposure.

Eligibility Criteria for the Work and Holiday Visa

Indian citizens interested in applying for the Work and Holiday visa must meet specific requirements, including:

  1. Age Requirement: Applicants must be under 30 years of age.
  2. Valid Passport: A valid Indian passport and national identity card are mandatory.
  3. Registration Fee: Applicants must pay a registration fee of AUD 25 (₹1,500). This will be required for participation in the visa ballot, which opens on October 1, 2024.

How Does the Ballot Process Work?

Australia’s Work and Holiday visa will be allocated through an annual ballot system. According to Immigration Australia, the program will have designated registration and selection periods for each participating country.

Eligible Indian passport holders must register their interest by completing a “Visa pre-application registration” form in their ImmiAccount under the “New application” tab. The process is designed to ensure a fair and transparent selection.

What Happens After Selection?

If selected through the ballot process, applicants will receive a “Notification of selection” email. This notification will invite them to apply for the Work and Holiday visa via ImmiAccount. Once selected, individuals will have 28 calendar days to submit their application and secure their spot in the program.
