Early Life and Education of Ash Kalra

Ash Kalra’s family immigrated to the United States in 1978, settling in San Jose, California. His educational journey began in San Jose public schools, culminating in his graduation from Oak Grove High School. Moving on to higher education, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in communications from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1993, followed by a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University in 1996.

Legal Career

Ash Kalra’s commitment to justice manifested early in his career. As a law student, he dedicated his time to teaching in inner-city schools in Washington, D.C. Upon returning to San Jose, he became a law professor at San Jose State University and Lincoln Law School.

His impactful role extended to being a deputy public defender for Santa Clara County for 11 years, where he passionately represented clients in felony and misdemeanor trials, with a significant focus on advocating for rehabilitation in drug treatment court.

Political Career

In 2008, Ash Kalra took a leap into local politics, getting elected to the San Jose City Council and representing District 2. His tenure was marked by a steadfast commitment to public safety, economic growth, and environmental conservation.

The culmination of his local success led him to the California State Assembly in 2016. In a historic win, Kalra became the first Hindu and Indian American to serve in the state legislature, representing the 25th Assembly District. His leadership extends to chairing significant committees, including the California Legislative Progressive Caucus and the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee.

Ash Kalra’s legislative prowess is evident in his authorship of the California Racial Justice Act of 2020, a landmark bill addressing racial discrimination in criminal sentencing and convictions. His dedication to confronting systemic bias also led to a follow-up bill in 2022, applying the Act retroactively to individuals with past convictions.

As an advocate for Bernie Sanders’s 2020 presidential campaign, Ash Kalra’s influence in California politics was further underscored by being considered for the position of Attorney General of California.

Beyond the political arena, Kalra’s personal life reflects his values. A devout Hindu and a vegan, he resides in San Jose, the city he has called home for over 37 years.
