Her journey from the streets of Trinidad to the global stage is a testament to her unwavering determination and visionary spirit.

Early Life and Education of Anya Ayoung-Chee

Anya Ayoung-Chee was born to Trinidadian parents in New York City but moved to Trinidad at the tender age of two, holding dual Trinidadian and American citizenship.

As the only daughter in a family of eight, Anya’s early years were marked by her pursuit of classical ballet training. Her passion for art and design blossomed during her time at St. Joseph’s Convent, an all-girls secondary school in Port of Spain.

Anya’s quest for knowledge and creativity took her to London and New York, where she studied graphic and interior design at the prestigious Parsons School of Design and Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design. However, her life took a poignant turn in 2007 with the untimely death of her brother Pilar, prompting her return to Trinidad.

Miss Universe Trinidad & Tobago

In 2008, Anya Ayoung-Chee’s life took a significant leap when she entered the Miss Universe Trinidad & Tobago competition and emerged victorious. Her heritage, a blend of Chinese, Indian, and Caucasian roots, made her a unique representative of Trinidad & Tobago’s diverse ethnic makeup. Anya eloquently addressed her multicultural background, highlighting the rich tapestry of her nation.

As Miss Universe Trinidad & Tobago, Anya became a prominent figure in the Caribbean media landscape, hosting various television and web-based shows, including her own fashion show, “Make It Yours.” Her influence extended beyond the screen as she engaged in philanthropic efforts through the TallMan Foundation, an organization founded by her family to empower underprivileged youth.

A Blossoming Fashion Career

Anya’s journey into the fashion world began with her participation in the Miss Universe pageant, where she showcased her design skills by styling her own wardrobe. This experience ignited her passion for fashion design, leading her to audition for Season 9 of the American television show “Project Runway” in 2011.

Despite having limited sewing experience, Anya’s natural talent and creativity shone through, earning her a spot in the top three of most challenges. Her dedication and innovative designs culminated in her winning the competition on October 27, 2011.

This victory provided her with a platform to launch her own women’s line, Pilar, named in honor of her late brother. Anya’s success on “Project Runway” also included features in Marie Claire, a $50,000 technology suite from HP and Intel, and a partnership with Piperlime.com. Her popularity soared as she was voted the fan favorite, earning an additional $10,000.

Entrepreneurial Ventures and Philanthropy

Anya Ayoung-Chee’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to create not only the Pilar line but also a lingerie collection named Anya de Rouge. Her influence extended to mentoring other designers on the reality show “Under the Gunn,” where she collaborated with Tim Gunn.

Anya’s love for Trinidad’s vibrant culture inspired her to host events and produce fashion for Trinidad’s carnival. She founded the online store cANYAval, a platform that collaborates with other designers to create clothing inspired by Trinidad’s carnival. The store specializes in “Monday Wear,” elaborate bathing suits worn on the day before carnival Tuesday.

As a travel ambassador for Trinidad and Tobago, Anya continues to promote her homeland’s rich cultural heritage. Her participation in Season 7 of “Project Runway All Stars” in 2019 showcased her enduring passion for fashion, even though she placed 10th overall.
