In a recent meeting, Anna University’s syndicate made a significant decision to implement a fee reduction for non-resident Indian (NRI) students, effective from the upcoming academic year.
The university has a policy of allocating 5% of the total sanctioned strength to the NRI category across various programs, including B.E., B.Tech., and other bachelor’s programmes.
Anna University Fee Updates
Anna University typically charges a USD 250 application fee, and a few years ago, the annual tuition fees was up-to USD 7,500, contingent upon the chosen course of study.
However, admissions under the NRI quota have faced criticism for various reasons over the years. Issues such as inadequate communication to parents about reduced seat availability a decade ago and, more recently, a controversy involving accusations against some professors for accepting bribes to facilitate the passing of NRI students have marred the university’s NRI admission process.
To address concerns and enhance accessibility, the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, announced that the reduced fees specifically apply to non-popular branches, excluding computer science engineering, information technology, and electronics and communication engineering.
In addition to fee adjustments, the university’s approach to NRI admissions has seen changes, with a reported tightening of the admission process. Interestingly, the university has discontinued its participation in education fairs abroad, which was previously a practice aimed at promoting the institution to potential NRI candidates.
These developments collectively reflect Anna University’s ongoing efforts to address concerns, streamline processes, and make higher education more accessible to the NRI community.
