Angella Dravid: Rising Above Hardship to Become a Comedy Icon

Angella Dravid: Using Comedy to Overcome Life’s Challenges

Life isn’t always straightforward. Sometimes, it throws curveballs that can break even the strongest spirits. But Angella Dravid, a New Zealand stand-up comedian, writer, and actress, is living proof that resilience, humor, and self-belief can turn even the darkest times into sources of strength and creativity. Born around 1985/1986, Dravid’s journey from adversity to success in the entertainment world is nothing short of inspirational.

Early Life of Angella Dravid: A Blend of Cultures and Challenges

Angella Dravid’s story begins in an unlikely setting—Oman. Born to a Samoan Christian mother and an Indian Hindu father, her upbringing was an intriguing mix of two contrasting cultures. This dynamic led to frequent debates at home, such as whether to eat meat, reflecting the rich diversity of perspectives within her family. It was in this environment that Dravid learned to navigate complex cultural expectations and family tensions, shaping her early worldview.

Her family eventually emigrated to Naracoorte, a rural town in South Australia. As a young girl growing up in a new land, Dravid sought creative outlets to express herself. In high school, she took up the violin, and her passion for music connected her to an online community where she met a classical musician. This chance encounter would lead her down a path filled with hardship, but also one that would ultimately redefine her life.

A Marriage, A Tragedy, and a Turning Point

Angella Dravid’s desire for connection brought her to the United Kingdom, where she pursued a relationship with the older musician she had met online. At just 19, she married him, but what seemed like a romantic journey quickly turned into a nightmare. The relationship became abusive, and Dravid found herself trapped in a violent marriage.

One night, in a moment of desperation, Angella Dravid assaulted her husband with a picture frame. This event led to her arrest and subsequent imprisonment. With no one to bail her out, Dravid spent two months in prison followed by three years in a bail hostel. During this time, she worked odd jobs, including at the prestigious Royal Ascot racecourse. Despite the traumatic circumstances, Dravid has since described her time in prison as strangely positive compared to the ongoing abuse she endured during her marriage.

Her eventual deportation to New Zealand marked the end of this dark chapter. Free from her abuser, she divorced her husband and started to rebuild her life. Yet, entertainment wasn’t initially on the horizon for Dravid. She worked in a variety of jobs, including as a receptionist at a brothel, trying to find her footing after the emotional and physical toll of her past.

From Open Mics to Comedy Stardom

Angella Dravid’s entry into comedy was almost accidental. She decided to attend an open mic night to conquer her anxiety and fear of public speaking, two obstacles that had been holding her back. To her surprise, her sets were well-received, sparking a new sense of purpose. Dravid continued to perform stand-up, finding humor in her painful experiences and transforming them into comedic gold.

In 2017, her efforts culminated in the creation of Down the Rabbit Hole, a darkly comedic one-woman show based on her abusive relationship and time in prison. The performance premiered at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival (NZICF) and was a resounding success. Angella Dravid’s raw, honest, and humorous take on trauma resonated with audiences, earning her the prestigious Billy T Award, which recognizes rising stars in New Zealand’s comedy scene.

Her success didn’t stop there. In 2020, it was announced that Dravid was working on adapting Down the Rabbit Hole into a feature film, a testament to the depth and resonance of her story. Dravid’s ability to take control of her narrative, turning pain into art, is a shining example of how creativity can serve as a powerful tool for healing and empowerment.

2024: Expanding Horizons with The Improfessionals

Fast forward to 2024, and Angella Dravid continues to expand her presence in the world of comedy. She teamed up with fellow comedian Abby Howells to form The Improfessionals, an improv group that debuted at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. This new venture showcases her versatility as a performer, highlighting her ability to blend structured storytelling with the spontaneity of improv comedy.

With The Improfessionals, Dravid continues to push boundaries, drawing from her unique life experiences and turning them into performances that make audiences laugh while offering thoughtful reflections on resilience, identity, and survival.
