In September 2025, NASA announced Kshatriya as its Associate Administrator, the highest-ranking civil servant in the agency, entrusted with shaping the future of humankind’s journey into the cosmos.

Stepping into the role of Associate Administrator, Amit Kshatriya now serves as the chief operating officer of NASA, leading its ten center directors and mission directorate associate administrators at headquarters in Washington, D.C.. Acting Sean Duffy, the current NASA Administrator, entrusted him with this monumental responsibility on September 3, 2025.

In this position, Kshatriya does far more than manage day-to-day operations—he shapes the strategic vision that drives the agency’s boldest initiatives, including the Artemis program to return humans to the Moon and the long-term mission of reaching Mars. His role bridges science, technology, engineering, and leadership on a scale few can fathom, making him one of the most influential voices in the global space community.

Building the Moon to Mars Bridge

Before ascending to the top of the agency, Amit Kshatriya served as the deputy associate administrator for the Moon to Mars Program in the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD) at NASA Headquarters. Here, he masterminded planning and implementation strategies for human missions to the Moon and Mars.

Kshatriya ensured that the development and operations of the Artemis missions were aligned with ESDMD’s rigorous technical standards. He served as the central point for risk management, orchestrating a symphony of engineers, scientists, and visionaries. Under his watch, Artemis planning matured into a concrete reality, setting the stage for humanity’s next giant leap.

Amit Kshatriya: From Robotics to Spacecraft: A Journey Through the Stars

Amit Kshatriya’s journey through NASA has been as diverse as it is extraordinary. Starting as a software and robotics engineer in 2003, he focused on the robotic assembly of the International Space Station (ISS). His engineering excellence soon propelled him into the role of ISS Flight Director from 2014 to 2017, where he led multinational teams in orchestrating missions aboard the orbiting laboratory.

During Expedition 50, he served as the lead flight director, demonstrating unmatched skill and composure—a performance that earned him the prestigious NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. He later became deputy, and then acting manager, of the ISS Vehicle Office, managing logistics, hardware, and sustaining engineering.

In 2021, he joined NASA Headquarters as an assistant deputy associate administrator, where he contributed significantly to the successful launch and return of the Artemis I spacecraft—marking the return of human-rated spacecraft destined for lunar missions.

Honored by Astronauts and Respected by Peers

Among his many accolades, Amit Kshatriya holds the rare Silver Snoopy award, bestowed by astronauts to recognize individuals who have made exceptional contributions to flight safety and mission success. He received it for his role as lead robotics officer during the SpaceX Dragon COTS Demo Flight, a landmark mission under the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program.

This blend of technical mastery and leadership excellence has made Kshatriya one of the most respected figures in aerospace engineering, admired not just for what he has achieved but for how he has inspired those around him.

A Scholar with Deep Roots

Amit Kshatriya’s brilliance is rooted in a strong academic foundation. He holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin.

Born in Brookfield, Wisconsin to first-generation Indian immigrants, he proudly considers Katy, Texas his hometown. Today, he and his wife are raising three children, embodying a blend of scientific brilliance and family values—a balance that reminds young professionals everywhere that ambition and groundedness can coexist.
