Ajay Raman: The Voice of Unity, Progress, and Sustainability

Ajay Raman: A Physician, Problem Solver, and People’s Champion in Oakland County

Ajay Raman, Oakland County Commissioner and proud Democrat, is not your typical public servant—he’s a physician, a small business owner, a first-generation Indian-American, and a community builder. As he runs for a second term representing District 14 on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners, Raman’s commitment to integrity, inclusive governance, and actionable solutions sets him apart in Michigan’s political landscape.

At a time when politics often feel divisive, Ajay Raman reminds us what public service should look like: honest leadership fueled by compassion, expertise, and a deep-rooted connection to the people.

Ajay Raman: From Immigrant Roots to Local Leadership

Ajay Raman’s American story began with his family’s pursuit of opportunity, values, and service. As a first-generation Indian-American, Raman grew up understanding the importance of education, discipline, and community—a foundation that would shape both his medical and political careers. When he and his wife chose Novi as their home more than a decade ago, they were captivated by Oakland County’s cultural vibrancy, open green spaces, and strong civic infrastructure.

Now, as Ajay Raman, Oakland County Commissioner, he is determined to give back to the community that gave him so much.

A Physician with a Purpose

As the founder of Physician Anesthesiologists of the Motor City, Raman’s career in healthcare has taught him more than medicine—it’s taught him to listen. Every patient he has treated reminded him of the power of empathy and the importance of timely, decisive action. These same skills define his work as a public official.

In his own words:

“As a physician, I never ask my patients what party they belong to. I listen. I help. I find solutions. Serving Oakland County should be no different.”

This nonpartisan, human-first approach is what makes Ajay Raman a leader for everyone.

Ajay Raman: A Progressive Champion with Bipartisan Impact

Ajay Raman has earned the endorsement of some of Michigan’s most respected progressive organizations, including:

  • Equality Michigan Action Network

  • Michigan League of Conservation Voters

  • Sierra Club – Michigan Chapter

  • Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan

These endorsements reflect his dedication to equity, environmental stewardship, and access to healthcare. But Ajay Raman doesn’t govern only for those who agree with him politically—he collaborates across the aisle to deliver results.

He believes that local government should focus less on political theatre and more on practical solutions. Whether it’s upgrading a water main or addressing mental health needs, Raman focuses on impact, not ideology.

A Platform Built for the People

Ajay Raman’s priorities reflect both his professional expertise and the lived experiences of Oakland County families:

1. Infrastructure

Infrastructure isn’t just about roads and bridges; it’s about strengthening the very backbone of our neighbourhoods. From modernising sewers and expanding walking paths to maintaining water quality and road safety, Ajay understands that resilient infrastructure leads to a better quality of life for all.

2. Public Safety

Raman honours the courage of first responders and works tirelessly to ensure they have the support and resources needed to keep communities safe. Public safety is a shared responsibility—and he’s committed to doing his part.

3. Mental Health

In the wake of global and local crises, Raman has made mental wellness a core part of his public agenda. As a healthcare professional, he recognizes that mental health is healthcare, and it must be accessible to all.

4. Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t an afterthought for Ajay Raman—it’s a mission. Whether partnering on local environmental projects or advocating for green spaces, he believes in leading by example. As Oakland County evolves, Raman is determined to create a future that’s both prosperous and eco-conscious.

5. Connecting Communities

Perhaps most importantly, Ajay Raman believes in unity over division. He champions collaboration between residents, agencies, and parties to create policies that reflect the diverse needs of his district.

“The divisiveness of Lansing and Washington does not have to be our normal in Oakland County,” he reminds voters.

Historic Leadership for a Modern Era

In 2022, Ajay Raman made history as the first Indian-American ever elected to the Oakland County Board of Commissioners. The moment, marked by an intimate swearing-in ceremony led by Justice Sima Patel, was more than symbolic—it represented a breakthrough in representation, diversity, and inclusion in local government.

Chairman David T. Woodward praised Raman’s “incredible passion for helping people” and his “unique experience” as a doctor and entrepreneur. Commissioner Gwen Markham celebrated the milestone, saying, “It has been a pleasure to welcome our first M.D. and Indian American commissioner.”

Ajay Raman: Deeply Rooted in Community

Ajay Raman doesn’t just work for the community—he lives and thrives in it. He’s a familiar face at Lakeshore Park, the Novi Public Library, and neighbourhood restaurants. As a long-time board member of a 266-unit homeowners association, he’s always been an advocate for fairness, transparency, and community engagement.

He leads with a sense of duty, not ambition. His family’s journey, his patients’ trust, and his neighbors’ support all inspire him to work harder for a better today and a brighter tomorrow.
