Agnès Monique Ohsan Bellepeau’s presence on national television brought her into the public eye and established her as a trusted voice in Mauritian households. Bellepeau’s deep understanding of social issues and her ability to communicate effectively were the foundation of her later political success.
A Historic Political Journey
Agnès Monique Ohsan Bellepeau’s transition from media to politics was marked by her dedication to social activism and her commitment to public service. Her political journey gained momentum when she won the parliamentary elections and was appointed Vice President of Mauritius on 12 November 2010.
This historic appointment followed the passing of Vice President Angidi Chettiar and marked a significant milestone as Bellepeau became the first woman to hold this esteemed position.

In an interview following her nomination, Agnès Monique Ohsan Bellepeau emphasized the importance of women’s participation in politics, stating, “The Prime Minister believes in the capacity of women and wants women to go forward.” Her words reflected a broader movement towards gender parity in Mauritian politics, a movement she was instrumental in advancing.
Acting Presidency: A Role Twice Assumed
Bellepeau’s leadership was further demonstrated when she assumed the role of Acting President of Mauritius twice. The first occasion was from 31 March 2012 to 21 July 2012, following the resignation of Sir Anerood Jugnauth.
During this period, Bellepeau’s steady hand guided the nation until Kailash Purryag’s inauguration. Her second tenure as Acting President came from 29 May 2015 to 5 June 2015, after President Purryag’s resignation, until Ameenah Gurib took office.
