Portonovo Ayyaswamy embarked on his academic journey at the University of Mysore, India, earning his B.E. in 1962. His insatiable thirst for knowledge led him to Columbia University, where he secured his M.S. in 1965 and M.E. in 1967. The pinnacle of his academic journey was reached in 1971 when he obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles.

His post-doctoral tenure at UCLA (1971-1973) laid the foundation for his impactful career. Researching capillary flows, nuclear reactor safety, and turbulence bounding theories showcased his early prowess in the field. Ayyaswamy joined the University of Pennsylvania in 1974 as an assistant professor, steadily rising to the distinguished position of Asa Whitney Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
