Jaishankar Discusses India’s Advantage in Fostering US Ties with Trump’s Leadership

At an interactive session hosted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar articulated India’s strategic advantage in fostering deeper ties with the United States under President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. Highlighting a robust political rapport, Jaishankar noted that India-US relations under Trump 2.0 stand out as a unique opportunity amidst global uncertainties.

Jaishankar: India’s Advantage in US Relations

Reflecting on Trump’s consistent positive outlook toward India, Jaishankar stated, “We’ll have to work out a political equation with America, and that is one area where we score. Trump has always had a positive political view of India.”

He emphasized that while many countries may view Trump’s return as a challenge, India’s long-standing ties provide a strategic edge. “We are in a much more advantageous position to translate Trump 2.0 into a deeper relationship,” he added, underlining India’s capacity to navigate potential challenges with a constructive approach.

Collaborating in Emerging Technologies

One of the pivotal aspects of India-US relations under Trump 2.0 lies in technological collaboration. Jaishankar highlighted India’s growing role in critical and emerging technologies, asserting that a partnership with the US in these sectors is mutually beneficial. “The two countries will have to build an understanding of mutual benefits and relationships in several areas like emerging and critical technologies as trusted partners,” he said.

Addressing Concerns in Trump’s Policies

Acknowledging concerns over Trump’s policy decisions on tariffs, climate change, and foreign affairs, Jaishankar emphasized India’s readiness to engage constructively. From the Russia-Ukraine conflict to tensions in West Asia, Jaishankar noted that India is committed to navigating these challenges while ensuring outcomes that align with mutual interests.

Strengthening Trade Partnerships

Discussing India’s ongoing negotiations for free trade agreements with the European Union and the UK, Jaishankar highlighted the complexities of aligning interests across EU member states. However, he remained optimistic, stating, “In the case of the EU, there are multiple members. So how to harmonize it? That is a challenge. But overall, we believe it will benefit us.”

India’s Global Rise under PM Modi

Jaishankar attributed India’s rising global stature to the transformative leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He remarked on how Modi’s third consecutive term has bolstered India’s credibility and influence internationally, further enhancing the prospects of India-US relations under Trump 2.0.

Supporting MSMEs and Economic Growth

Turning to domestic priorities, Jaishankar underscored the role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India’s economic framework. “We have to create more manufacturing zones, improve logistics, and make ourselves more competitive,” he stated.

The government’s focus on safeguarding MSMEs during trade negotiations was also emphasized. Jaishankar revealed that India is reviewing its free trade agreement with ASEAN to address its impact on agriculture and MSMEs.
