The Rise of Saraswathy s/o Kandasami in Malaysian Politics

Born on September 24, 1968, Saraswathy s/o Kandasami began her career as a lawyer, demonstrating a commitment to justice and equality. Her legal expertise laid the foundation for her political endeavors, as she transitioned to serving the nation through active participation in public administration. Her affiliation with the People’s Justice Party (PKR), a core component of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, marked the beginning of her political journey.

In July 2022, Saraswathy s/o Kandasami was appointed Vice President of PKR by the party’s president, Anwar Ibrahim. This appointment highlighted her exceptional leadership qualities and strategic vision. She shared this esteemed position with other prominent leaders, solidifying her place among Malaysia’s most influential political figures.

A Debut That Demonstrated Her Resolve

Saraswathy’s first foray into electoral politics came during the 2022 general election, where she contested the Tapah federal seat. Though she narrowly lost to the incumbent MP, Saravanan Murugan, her candidacy showcased her courage and determination to make a difference. Despite the setback, she continued to champion her vision for Malaysia’s future.

A Transformative Role as Deputy Minister

In December 2022, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recognized Saraswathy’s potential and appointed her as the Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development. In this role, she worked alongside Minister Ewon Benedick to foster entrepreneurship and cooperative growth across Malaysia. Her efforts to stimulate economic development and empower small businesses demonstrated her unwavering dedication to improving the lives of Malaysians.

Simultaneously, Saraswathy s/o Kandasami was appointed as a Senator, allowing her to hold the deputy ministerial position despite not being an elected MP. This dual role reflected her significance in the national political landscape.

Championing National Unity

A cabinet reshuffle in December 2023 brought Saraswathy s/o Kandasami a new challenge and opportunity: serving as Deputy Minister of National Unity under Minister Aaron Ago Dagang. This transition underscored her versatility and commitment to fostering a harmonious Malaysia.

Under her leadership, the Ministry of National Unity emphasized strengthening neighborhood initiatives and community development. She announced proposed amendments to the 2012 Rukun Tetangga Act, aiming to enhance neighborhood watch committees and promote social cohesion. Saraswathy played a pivotal role in expanding the reach of these committees, which now encompass over 210,000 members representing 12.5 million Malaysians.

Saraswathy s/o Kandasami’s focus on youth engagement through programs such as Young, Effective, and Smart (YES), Jiran Muda, and e-Entrepreneur initiatives exemplified her forward-thinking approach.
