Sarah Avraham: Champion Fighter, Faithful Believer, and Inspirational Role Model

Sarah Avraham’s story is a testament to resilience, transformation, and unwavering faith. Born in Mumbai, India, Avraham’s journey from an Indian teenager to an Israeli Muay Thai world champion and Orthodox Jew embodies the strength of purpose and the courage to pursue one’s path against all odds. Through her achievements in the competitive world of Thai boxing and her devotion to a life of faith, Sarah has not only made history but also inspired countless individuals around the world.

Early Life in India: A Bond of Friendship and Tragedy

Born in 1993/1994 in Mumbai, India, Sarah Avraham grew up in a multicultural household with a Hindu father, Dr. Aaron Avraham (formerly known as Hagirdas Pradesh), a physician, and a Christian mother, a dedicated nurse. Her family was close friends with Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka, who served as Jewish emissaries in the Chabad House of Mumbai.

In 2008, during the horrific terrorist attacks in Mumbai, the Holtzbergs were tragically killed, leaving an indelible mark on Avraham’s life. Only 14 at the time, Avraham was deeply affected by the loss of her family friends, an event that would inspire her life journey in unforeseen ways.

Conversion and Immigration: A New Chapter in Israel

One year after the Mumbai attacks, Sarah Avraham and her family made the life-altering decision to convert to Judaism. This profound shift reflected their spiritual commitment and was a step toward honoring the memory of the Holtzbergs. In 2009, the family immigrated to Israel, choosing to settle in the West Bank Israeli settlement of Kiryat Arba, near Hebron. Embracing her new life in Israel, Avraham not only adapted to her new cultural and religious surroundings but also found a renewed purpose and strength in her faith.

Settling in Kiryat Arba, Sarah Avraham immersed herself in the study of Torah at a religious girls’ school, known as an ulpana. As an Orthodox Jew, she embraced the practices and values of her faith with dedication. In addition to her studies, Sarah also volunteered as a firefighter, participating in numerous firefighting operations. Her commitment to both her religion and her community continued to shape her character and outlook on life.

Discovering Muay Thai: The Start of a Champion’s Journey

While attending the ulpana, Sarah Avraham discovered an unexpected passion: Muay Thai kickboxing. Her interest in the sport began when her physical fitness instructor, Michael Pollack, introduced her to the discipline of kickboxing. Recognizing her potential, Pollack connected Avraham with Eddie Yusopov, a respected Thai boxing coach. Under Yusopov’s guidance, she trained rigorously and began honing her skills in Muay Thai, a sport that requires a blend of strength, discipline, and resilience.

Sarah Avraham’s journey in Muay Thai was not an easy one. Training five days a week at the boxing center at Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium, she faced numerous challenges. Like many Israeli athletes, Avraham did not receive financial support to cover her training costs or travel expenses for competitions.

Determined to continue her path, Sarah Avraham worked multiple jobs, including cleaning houses, walking dogs, and waitressing, to fund her training. Avraham’s determination to succeed despite financial constraints is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices and perseverance required to achieve one’s dreams.

Rising to the Top: National and World Championships

In September 2012, Sarah Avraham achieved her first major milestone, winning the Israeli national women’s Thai boxing championship in the 57–63 kg (125–140 lbs) weight class. At only 18 years old, she was already becoming a prominent figure in the Israeli sports world. Her victory in the national championship fueled her ambition to reach even greater heights.

Two years later, in 2014, Avraham’s hard work and dedication paid off when she won the Women’s World Thai-Boxing Championship in Bangkok, Thailand. Competing in the 57–63.5 kg (125–140 lbs) weight class, she triumphed over international competitors, solidifying her place as a world champion. This remarkable achievement not only brought pride to Israel but also highlighted the extraordinary journey of a young woman who had transformed her life through faith, resilience, and passion.

A Life of Faith, Purpose, and Service

Sarah Avraham’s dedication to her faith is as integral to her story as her achievements in the ring. Observing the dietary laws of kashrut, Avraham brings her own kosher food when traveling for competitions. Her commitment to Orthodox Judaism shapes every aspect of her life, from her training routines to her day-to-day actions. Avraham’s journey demonstrates how an unwavering commitment to personal beliefs can coexist with the pursuit of athletic excellence, even in a sport as demanding as Muay Thai.

Beyond her athletic pursuits, Sarah Avraham is dedicated to giving back to her community. Her work as a volunteer firefighter is just one example of her commitment to serving others. Despite her grueling training schedule, she continues to participate in firefighting operations, showing her strength and resolve to make a positive impact. Sarah’s desire to pursue a career in either medicine or as a full-time firefighter reflects her commitment to a life of service and care for others.
