Born in Australia to an Indian diplomat, he spent his childhood in diverse countries, including India, Mauritius, Afghanistan, Czechoslovakia, and the Netherlands. Dhamija’s education was equally diverse and prestigious. He attended Mayo College, one of India’s leading boarding schools, and then went on to King’s School in Canterbury, UK. He later graduated with a Master of Arts in law from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. His academic journey laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors in business and politics.
The Birth of an Entrepreneur
Dinesh Dhamija’s professional career began at IBM, but his entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to pursue his own business ventures. In 1980, alongside his wife Tani, he started selling travel tickets from a kiosk at Earl’s Court tube station in London. This humble beginning marked the start of what would become a remarkable journey in the travel industry.
By 1983, Dinesh Dhamija had transformed the small kiosk into Flightbookers, a travel agency with three established premises. The business grew rapidly, and in 1987, it was appointed the General Sales Agent for Royal Nepal Airlines in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Over the next decade, Flightbookers expanded its presence across Europe, establishing offices in 12 countries.
The Ebookers Revolution
In 1996, Dinesh Dhamija was introduced to the burgeoning potential of the Internet. Recognizing its immense possibilities, he embarked on raising funds to develop an online branch of Flightbookers. In 1999, Ebookers was born, becoming the first interactive online travel agency in the United Kingdom. This venture revolutionized the travel industry, making it easier for people to book their travel plans online.
Under Dhamija’s leadership, Ebookers quickly established itself as one of Europe’s leading travel agencies. In 2005, he sold the company for a staggering £209 million, solidifying his status as one of the wealthiest Asian residents in the UK. As of 2004, his estimated worth was around £100 million.
Awards and Subsequent Ventures
Dinesh Dhamija’s entrepreneurial achievements did not go unnoticed. In 2003, he was awarded the prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year award by Management Today magazine. His success with Ebookers was just one chapter of his diverse career. He later founded and chaired the Copper Beech Group, a firm involved in residential property development in Romania and educational infrastructure in India.
Transition to Politics
Dinesh Dhamija’s journey from business to politics began in 2014 when he joined the Liberal Democrats. In 2016, then-party leader Tim Farron appointed him as a business adviser to the party. Dhamija’s dedication and expertise led to his role as the party’s Deputy Treasurer.
In 2018, Dinesh Dhamija aspired to become the Liberal Democrats’ candidate for the 2020 London Mayoral election, although he ultimately lost to Siobhan Benita. Undeterred, Dhamija continued his political journey and was selected as a candidate for the 2019 European Parliament elections.
Despite an unsuccessful legal action to secure the top list position, he was elected as one of three Liberal Democrat MEPs for the London Region on 23 May 2019.
Ongoing Contributions and Legacy
Beyond his political career, Dhamija remains an influential figure in various sectors. He is a member of the think tank Bridge India and actively contributes to discussions on international trade and economics. In April 2023, he wrote a blog article for the organization on the Asia Pacific Trade Deal, showcasing his ongoing engagement with global economic issues.
