After completing her schooling at Modern School, New Delhi, she pursued higher education at Miranda House, University of Delhi, and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii.

She began her professional life as a lecturer at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, New Delhi, before pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Alberta. It was during this time that she met and married S.M.A. Hameed, a distinguished professor.

In 1984, Syeda Saiyidain Hameed returned to India, where she embarked on a path of social activism and advocacy. Her tenure at institutions such as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Nehru Memorial Museum and Library marked the beginning of her scholarly inquiry into Sufism and Muslim socio-political dynamics.
Founding Social Organizations
The new millennium saw Hameed emerge as a driving force behind several impactful organizations. Co-founding initiatives such as the Muslim Women’s Forum, Women’s Initiative for Peace in South Asia, and South Asians for Human Rights, she championed causes ranging from women’s rights to interfaith dialogue.
Government Service and Institutional Leadership
In 2004, Hameed’s advocacy efforts culminated in her appointment to the Planning Commission of India, where she wielded influence in shaping policies related to health, women, and minorities. Additionally, she served as Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad, advocating for equitable access to education.
